Tips for Designing Best-Selling Print-On-Demand Products on Etsy
One of the main keys to success with Etsy print-on-demand (POD) is creating products that connect with a specific audience. Thousands of new listings are added every day, so the shops that consistently generate sales are the ones that combine thoughtful design with a clear understanding of what customers are looking for. Whether you’re selling apparel, mugs, wall art, tote bags, or home décor, these tips can help you create products that stand out and sell.
(Now, with this said, my Etsy store is still a work in progress. Some of these things I am sharing are areas I am still working on. One of the main reasons I started this site is to share my journey. I have had my Etsy store for just over 2 months now).
Start with a Specific Niche
One of the biggest mistakes new Etsy sellers make is designing for everyone. Instead, focus on a well-defined audience. Products created for hikers, teachers, nurses, gardeners, campers, book lovers, or national park enthusiasts are much more likely to attract buyers than generic designs.
Think about the hobbies, lifestyles, or values of your ideal customer. The more specific your niche, the easier it becomes to create products that feel personal and meaningful.
My niche on Etsy is hiking/being active outdoors & Nature. Probably too broad still! I have actually found this to be one of the most difficult tasks in starting my Etsy store. I have other interests as well, which makes me want to have 5 Etsy stores. 🙂
Solve a Customer’s Problem
The best-selling products solve a need. This need can be related to mental/emotional needs as well as physical. For instance, a cozy & warm hoodie for campers. The hoodie keeps them warm, but the graphic on the hoodie will also appeal to their need for belonging.
This is what I thought about when I designed my CEO Hoodie Blanket. Camp Entertainment Officer- for those campers who want to stay warm around the campfire and who identify with being the life of the party in Camp. So far, it hasn’t sold.. but I have faith that it will. (And yes- I know the importance of data in making decisions on which products to keep). One thing I am learning is to not get too attached to designs that don’t sell. I will be doing a deep analysis on my Etsy store soon and will share the details on the changes I make.
Ask yourself:
- Who is this product for?
- Why would someone buy it?
- What emotion does it create?
- What problem does it solve?
Designs that inspire laughter, nostalgia, motivation, or a sense of belonging tend to perform especially well on Etsy.
Follow Trends- But Do Not Copy
Keeping an eye on design trends can give you valuable inspiration. Vintage colors, retro typography, minimalist artwork, botanical themes, cottagecore, outdoor adventure, and personalized gifts continue to perform well.
Kittl has a design feature where you literally take a design- and can give Kittl a prompt to change colors, wording and style. I think this is good- and bad. Great for those who aren’t that great at design (like myself) and bad for those who just want to copy.
But you should never copy another seller’s artwork. Instead, notice broader trends in colors, styles, and customer interests, then create your own original interpretation. Unique products build a stronger brand and reduce competition. I assure you- your shop will do not well if you try to replicate other stores designs exactly without putting your own creative spin on it.
Design for Quality
Great artwork should look professional on every product size. Use high-resolution graphics, balanced layouts, and readable fonts. Avoid cluttered designs with too many elements competing for attention. Every print on demand platform- like Printful have templates and design guides that you can use to accurately size your designs.
If you’re designing apparel, remember that simplicity often wins. A clean mountain illustration with a meaningful phrase may outperform an overly detailed graphic that becomes difficult to read from a distance.
Always preview your design on multiple product colors before publishing.
Choose Products Your Audience Will Love
Instead of placing every design on dozens of products, think about what makes sense for your niche.
For example:
- Outdoor lovers may appreciate hoodies, insulated mugs, water bottles, and camping blankets.
- Pet lovers often enjoy personalized apparel, ornaments, and wall art.
- Fitness enthusiasts may prefer workout shirts, journals, and motivational posters.
Matching the product to your audience increases the chances of making a sale.

Create Collections
Successful Etsy shops often build product collections rather than individual listings. A customer who loves one design may also purchase matching items.
For example, a national park collection might include:
- Hoodies
- T-shirts
- Stickers
- Coffee mugs
- Posters
- Tote bags
Collections strengthen your brand and encourage larger purchases.
Make Your Listings Stand Out
Even the best design won’t sell if shoppers never click on it.
Use high-quality mockups that clearly display your product. Lifestyle images help customers imagine themselves using the item, while close-up images highlight print quality and important details.
Include multiple listing photos showing:
- Different angles
- Product features
- Size information
- Gift ideas
- Care instructions when appropriate
Professional presentation builds trust with potential buyers.
Optimize Your Keywords
Beautiful designs need great SEO to be discovered.
Use descriptive keywords that shoppers are likely to search for, including:
- Product type
- Style
- Recipient
- Occasion
- Theme
- Color
- Activity
Instead of simply using “shirt,” try phrases like “vintage hiking sweatshirt,” “camping gift for women,” or “national park hoodie.”
Long-tail keywords generally attract buyers who are closer to making a purchase.
Keep Testing New Ideas
Very few Etsy shops become successful with their first design. The most successful sellers continually experiment with new products, colors, sayings, and styles. There are shops that have over 1,000 designs and others that are doing great with less than 20.
Data to Pay attention to:
- Favorites
- Click-through rates
- Conversion rates
- Customer reviews
- Seasonal trends
Over time, patterns will emerge that help you understand what your audience truly wants.
Build a Recognizable Brand
Customers are more likely to remember shops with a consistent style. Choose a cohesive color palette, typography, photography style, and overall design aesthetic.
When your products share a recognizable look, your shop feels more professional and trustworthy. Returning customers also become more likely because they know what to expect.
Final Thoughts
Designing best-selling print-on-demand products on Etsy is a combination of creativity, strategy, and consistency. Focus on serving a specific audience, create original designs that solve a problem or evoke emotion, and present your products professionally. Continue learning from your shop analytics, refine your designs, and don’t be afraid to experiment with new ideas.
Success rarely happens overnight, but every new listing provides valuable insight into what your customers love. Stay consistent, keep improving your designs, and remember that a strong brand built around quality and authenticity is one of the most powerful advantages you can have on Etsy.
